OLYMPIADS VIII

RATIONAL NUMBERS
            IMPORTANT FACTS AND FORMULAE

1) Fractions: Number of the form a/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b≠ 0, are called fraction, e.g., 2/3, 7/9, 11/9, etc.

2) Rational Numbers: Numbers of the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q≠ 0, are called rational number, e.g., 0, -3, 5/6, -7/8, 23/30 etc.,
Clearly, all fraction are rational numbers but all rational numbers are not fractions .

3) if N= set of natural numbers .
W= set of phone numbers .
       I= set of integers.
       Q=  set of rational numbers.
Then N ⊂ W ⊂ I ⊂ Q, where '⊂' denotes  ' is a subset of '
Thus, all natural numbers , whole numbers and integers are rational numbers.

4) Equivalent Rational Numbers:  A rational number obtained by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator of a given rational number by the same nonzero integer is said to be equivalent to the given rational number.
Thus, p/q, (p/m)/(q/m) and pm/qm (where m is a nonzero integer) are equivalent rational numbers.

5) Standard Form of a Rational Number: A rational number a/b is said to be in standard form if
  i) a and b are integers having no common divisors/factor other than 1, and
 ii) b is a positive.

6) Comparison of Rational Numbers : Let a/b and c/d be two rational numbers.
 Then,
 i) a/b = c/d if ad = bc,
ii) a/b > c/d if ad > bc.
iii) a/b < c/d if ad< bc.

7) Every rational number can be represented by the unique point on the number line.
Positive rational numbers lie on the right side of 0 on the number line while negative rational numbers lie on the left side of 0.
Thus, -2/3 lies on the left side of 0, while 5/6 lies on the right side of 0 on the number line.
Remember
-5/-6 is written as 5/6 and so lies on the right side of 0 on the number line .

8) Addition Of Rational Numbers
Property.                      Satisfied or not satisfied
a) Closure property      satisfied
The sum of two rational numbers is a rational number
b) commutative (Ordering) property.    Satisfied a/b + c/d = c/d + a/b

c) Associative (Grouping property) property     satisfied (a/b + c/d)+ e/f = a/b + (c/d + e/f)
d) additive identity        0 is the additive identity a/b + 0 = 0 + a/b = a/b
e) Existence of additive inverse additive     additive inverse of a/b is - a/b.
                                   a/b + (-a/b)= (-A/b) + a/b = 0

b) commutative property  not satisfied  a/b - c/d ≠ c/d - a/b
c) Associative property.       notes satisfied a/b - (c/d - e/f)≠ (a/b - c/d) - e/f

10) Multiplication of Rational Numbers
property         satisfied or not satisfied
a) Closure property      satisfied
the product of two rational numbers is rational numbers
b) commutative property    satisfied   a/b x c/d = c/d x a/b
c) associative property         satisfied (a/b x c/d) x e/f = a/b x (c/d x e/f).
d) multiplicative identity       1 is the multiplicative identity. a/b x 1 = 1 x a/b = a/b
e) Existence of multiplicative inverse (or reciprocal)      Multiplicative inverse a/b is b/a
                                                      a/b x b/a = b/a x a/b = 1
f) Distributive law of multiplication over addition.       a/b x (c/d + e/f)= (a/b x c/d)+ (a/b x e/f)
Note:

iv) The reciprocal of reciprocal of a number is the number itself.

11) Division of Rational Numbers
 property               satisfied or not satisfied
a) closure property.       satisfied only by non zero rational numbers.
The quotient of two non-zero rational numbers is a rational number.
b) Commutative property         not satisfied  a/b ÷ c/d ≠ c/d ÷ a/b
c) Associative property             not satisfied  (a/c ÷ c/d) ÷ e/f ≠ a/b ÷(c/d ÷ e/f).
Note
i) a/b ÷ 1 = a/b and a/b ÷ a/b = 1
ii) a/b ÷ c/d = a/d x d/c.
iii) Division by zero is not defined.
iv) a/b ÷ (-1)= -a/b ; -a/b ÷ 1 = -a/b; -a/b÷ (-1)= a/b.
v) For three rational numbers a, b and c,
       a÷ (b + c) ≠ a ÷ b + a ÷ c;
       a ÷ (b - c)≠ a ÷ b - a ÷ c

12) Absolute Value Of A Rational Number
If a is any rational number then
         a if a > 0
|a|= - a if a < 0,
         0 if a= 0
Note:
i) The absolute value of both a and - a is a
ii) if a and b are rational numbers then |a + b| ≤ |a| + |b| and |a x b|= |a| x |b|.

13) Between any two given rational numbers , there exist infinitely many rational numbers.

14) if x and y are two rational numbers then  (x + y)/2 is a rational number between x and y, i.e., x < (x+ y)/2 < y.
Thus the idea of mean is used to find a rational number between two given rational numbers.

15) Decimal Representation of Rational Numbers
Rational numbers when expressed in decimal have either terminating or non terminating repeating (or recurring 0) forms.
A rational number can be expressed as a terminating decimal if the denominator has only 2 or 5 as factors.
Thus, 13/80 has a terminating decimal representation since 80 = 2⁴ x 5, but 13/24 has a non terminating repeating decimal representation as 24 = 2³ x 3.

16) Irrational Numbers :
Numbers which when expressed in decimals would be in nonterminating and non repeating from are called irrational numbers. These include:
a) square roots of numbers which are not perfect square, e.g., √2, √3, √5, √7, √11, √19, etc.
b) cube roots of numbers which are not perfect cubes, e.g., ³√2, ³√7, ³√13, etc.
